What is Taiko

What is Taiko drumming?  Big drums. Big sticks.  Exuberant shouts  and  choreographed  movements. It’s more  than this though ……

Performances

Taiko is performance drumming…with safety in numbers. So if you want the chance to get up on stage or in the street this may be your chance…..

“Energising and uplifting. I leave every session with a sense of achievement”

“Energy! I always have much more buzz when I leave than when I arrive”

“Wonderful stuff for all ages and all walks of life”

“Extremely worthwhile physically, culturally and artistically”

What our students say..

Chief instructor, Ian Bennett

Our instructor, Ian Bennett, discovered Taiko drumming after a background of over 20 years training and teaching martial arts, mostly Chinese based styles, Karate and Escrima.  This was followed with experience in group hand drumming (African Djembe), electronic drum pads and finally full kit drumming.

However, a chance visit to a Taiko performance led to realising the potential to merge all of these years of experience  and to create an uplifting and community based group for adults to enjoy the exuberance and spirit that comes from playing Taiko.

Following an intensive teacher training course with Kagemusha Taiko in the UK and a period of six months building enough pipe drums to offer public workshops, Taiko Evolution was born over 5 years ago.

Ian has since completed training courses and workshops with San Jose Taiko, Taiko Project, Taiko Meantime, Joji Hirota and further teacher training courses with Kagemusha.

Student quote:

“Drumming in a large group is so exhilarating – it pounds through your body like a giant’s heartbeat. Wonderful stuff for all ages and all walks of life!”

You can be part of the action and experience it yourself..…

If you’ve ever seen a taiko group perform you’ll have heard the driving rhythms and felt the energy waves that Taiko drumming creates. It’s an exhilarating and uplifting experience to watch. But it’s so much more exhilarating and uplifting to play those big drums yourself, to become immersed in the beat and to play with a team of others .This is what Taiko drumming is really all about - being part of the action and truly enjoying yourself!.
